The man entered the house of Firoze Khan at Khodna Khurd village late last night, a police officer said, adding hearing noise Khan woke up and alerted his neighbours.
Neighbours rushed to the house and nabbed the thief. They thrashed him before handing him over to police.
An FIR has been lodged at Surajpur police station, the officer added.
In another incident, robbers struck at a house in Sector Delta 2 here and stole cash and jewellery.
The inhabitants of the house were away when the incident took place, a police officer said, adding the robbery came to light when the family members returned home last night.
