Three men including a Bangladeshi has been arrested by the Maldivian police for the brutal rape and assault of an Indian teacher in the country.
The young Indian computer teacher, who was raped in Alif Dhaal Atoll Dhangethi on February 11, suffered serious sexual trauma, police said.
Head of Serious and Organised Crime Department Mohamed Dawood said that the Indian teacher was raped at knife point and was still being treated at the Atoll Hospital for injuries sustained during the ordeal.
Dawood said when the police had arrived at the scene, the woman was slumped near the bed which was covered in blood.
Doctors at the island health centre could not control the bleeding, he said and hence was rushed to the Atoll hospital, Haveeru daily reported.
The perpetrators had also stolen her laptop computer, mobile phone and her previous month's salary.
Dawood said a Bangladeshi man and two Maldivians were arrested in connection with the case. He added that the Bangladesh man is believed to have committed the rape.
"We had monitored all vessels leaving the island during the investigation. In that regard, we first took the two Maldivians into custody. But later we arrested the Bangladesh man living in the island as his behaviour was suspicious," Dawood said.
He said the police had recovered the victim's laptop, mobile phone and the knife believed to have been used to threaten the woman from the home of the Bangladesh suspect.
