Three persons were arrested today in connection with the mysterious fire that partially damaged the holy car of Nagore dargah on April 4 and police were on the look out for a few others involved in the act.
The holy car, locked inside a shed, was found enveloped in flames in the early morning on Friday by a person involved in the beautification works.
Fire tenders parked near the dargah in connection with the ongoing festival rushed to the spot and extinguished the blaze.
Acting on a complaint from the person, police arrested three persons - identified as Mohammed Askin (31), Mohammed Abdul Kader (31) and Kamal Mustafa (30), belonging to Nagore town.
Enquiries revealed that they had attempted to burn the holy car as they considered the "Sandanakoodu" car procession was against the principles of Islam. Further investigations are on.
The fire incident has taken place at a time when the 14 day annual festival in the 500-year old dargah is underway.
Police are keeping a tight vigil in view of a large turn out of pilgrims from various parts of the country to the town in connection with the festival.
The death anniversary of Saint Hazrath Syed Shahul Hameed, is observed as 'Kandoori Festival' every year for 14 days. The 457th annual festival commenced with hoisting of the holy flag on April one. 'Sandanakoodu Procession' and anointment of sandal, the most important events in the festival are scheduled to take place on Apr 10.
