Timely disaster cell action prevents building collapse deaths

The Thane Municipal Corporation Regional Disaster Managment Cell (RDMC) saved the lives of several families in the city by initiating preventive operations, officials said here today.
Due to rains, some structures in the city developed cracks, after which a portion of Shubham Building's wall collapsed in the Kopri locality of suburban Thane East this afternoon, RDMC officer-in-charge Santosh Kadam told PTI today evening.
However, RDMC and fire brigade teams rushed to the spot and rescued five families successfully, he said.
In another incident, a part of the first floor of the five-storeyed Alimiya House in Mahagiri was found to be in a dangerous condition after its walls developed cracks.
A dozen families were rescued from the building and shifted to safer places.
In other locations too, a couple of families in precarious buildings were shifted to safer locations, he said.
