Airport Director R Gunasekaran told PTI that they require 510 acres for runway expansion on the northern side of the airport, of which 370 acres has already been acquired. The remaining portion would be got after the relevant documents are handed to them by the state authorities.
The airport is looking to appoint a consultant to handle the expansion project, he said.
"Tenders have already been floated and we are hopeful of the commencement of the work before March 2017," he added.
The airport handles 15 lakh passengers annually and this figure is likely to touch 20 lakh mark by next year, he said.
