A group of BJP workers including some ABVP activists were allegedly assaulted by Trinamool Congress supporters here today when they gathered to file nominations for the upcoming students' union election in Kalna College.
A group of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) activists, the students' wing of BJP, had gathered at the party office, around 400 metres from the Kalna College before going to file nominations, when TMC supporters, armed with sticks attacked and assaulted them, alleged Sushanta Pandey, president of BJP's Burdwan (East) wing.
"Six of our party workers have been admitted to the Kalna hospital with injuries. Trinamool Congress is yet again using terror as their only option to gain control in college unions and stopping us from filing nominations," Pandey said.
Trinamool Congress Chhatra Parishad (TMCP), TMC students' wing state vice-president Sandip Basu rubbished the allegations saying no one was stopped from filing nominations.
"TMCP members did not stop anyone from filing nominations in Kalna. There is an internal feud in the local BJP unit, which led to today's scuffle. It is their (BJP) own problem," Basu said.
No ABVP member could, however, file nominations in the college today.
Minor scuffles broke out in Durgapur Government College and Michael Madhusudan College between ABVP and TMCP supporters over filing of nominations for the students' union elections, but no one was injured in those incidents, police said.
TMCP supporters also allegedly clashed with Students' Federation of India (SFI) in Khandra College in neighbouring Andal.
SFI leaders claimed three of their supporters were detained by the police, though a complaint was lodged against the TMCP for trying to disrupt the nomination procedure and preventing SFI candidates from filing nominations.
