MGR Centenary Film Studio, the tallest such structure in the country, was inaugurated by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister K Palaniswami near here today.

The 56 feet tall, 110 metres long and 100 feet wide studio was constructed using funds collected by the Federation of Film Employees Union of South India (FEFSI), at Paiyanur.

"I am happy to inaugurate the Studio named after MGR (former Chief Minister M G Ramachandran). It is also the tallest film studio set up in the country," he said.

Palaniswami recalled that the state which was home to several film studios earlier, witnessed a drop in numbers as they were converted to residential or commercial buildings.

"It is appropriate at this juncture to congratulate the employees of FEFSI for having made donations to establish this studio," he said.

He suggested that directors of other language films could consider the studio for shooting, and added it would also lead to creation of jobs.

The Chief Minister also assured government's support to construct houses, as per the Labour laws, for FEFSI workers.

To a request by FEFSI President and film director R K Selvamani for funds to set up an auditorium, Palaniswami said, "I am happy to inform that the government will offer Rs 5 crore to set it up.
