Tamil Nadu Congress Committee President EVKS Elangovan today accused BJP of doublespeak in its stand on AIADMK supremo Jayalalithaa's acquittal and sought to know if it would act against Subramanian Swamy who proposed to file an appeal against her.
BJP leader Swamy's tweet to this effect, he said, was despite the state BJP leaders seemingly softening their stance towards Jayalalithaa.
"I don't know why BJP leaders like Union Minister Pon Radhakrishnan and Tamil Nadu unit chief Tamilisai Soundararajan, who were critical of AIADMK chief, have suddenly started reading out congratulatory messages," he said.
In his statement, Elangovan also criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for greeting Jayalalithaa.
"Why this doublespeak? Prime Minister Modi greets Jayalalithaa while Subramanian Swamy says he will file an appeal against her in the Supreme Court. If they have some sense of self-respect, will TN BJP raise their voice to oust Swamy?" he questioned.
Asked about Elangovan's remarks, Tamilisai Soundararajan said, "Swamy was a complainant in the disproportionate assets case against Jayalalithaa. Our party has got nothing to do with the case. If he is going to appeal, it is his discretion," she told PTI.
On TNCC chief's accusation that the state BJP unit has now softened their stance towards AIADMK chief, she said it was not a proper view.
"Our greetings to her was out of political decency, she is the chief of the state's ruling party and it is only a courtesy to congratulate her.
"May I question why Elangovan invited DMK MP Kanimozhi to a literary event held at his party office recently? I will not pose such a question as I can see such things in a broader and correct perspective," she said.
It was a literary programme and 2G Spectrum allegations against "sister Kanimozhi" must not be viewed as a barrier to inviting her and similarly greetings to the AIADMK chief should also be seen in similar circumstances, the leader added.
