The hosts scored a hard-fought 27-25, 25-21, 26-24 win over Punjab on the opening day of the event.
In the women's section, the mighty Railways beat Haryana 25-13, 25-13, 25-7 to begin its title defence in style.
The men's match turned out to be a neck-and-neck affair with both the teams fighting hard in all the three games, but Tamil Nadu edged out the visitors in the end.
