Tamil Nadu government today announced that a memorial would be constructed in memory of the 18th century chieftain from Panchalankurichi, Veerapandiya Kattabomman, who was executed by the British.
Chief Minister Jayalalithaa made this announcement in the Assembly after Kovilpatti MLA Kadambur Raju requested the government to construct a memorial at Kayathar in Tirunelveli district.
Kattabomman was executed by the British in 1799 and is believed to have been denied a fair trial, after he opposed the British and refused to pay tax to them.
Information and Special Programme Implementation Minister K T Rajenthra Bhalaji said government would consider the requests of members of left parties to construct memorials for renowned Tamil scholar Ma Po Sivagnanam and Mysore king Tipu Sultan.
