Tamil Nadu government today said it will provide over 5000 tonnes of free rice to mosques across the state to be used in the preparation of gruel during the Ramzan festival season.
The move was keeping in line with the similar practice followed in previous years, an official release said, recalling that the initiative was earlier launched by former chief minister J Jayalalithaa.
Chief Minister K Palaniswami has received requests from the Muslim community for provision of free rice this year also, following which he has approved the supply of 5145 tonnes for around 3000 mosques, it said.
The government will incur an additional expenditure of Rs 12.97 crore, it added.
