A grief-stricken woman, who lost her son two days ago, today tried to commit suicide after poisoning her two daughters at Padasahi village in Odisha's Jajpur district.
The woman has been identified as Ketaki Jena (45) and her two daughter -- Gurubari (12) and Mamata (15), police said.
The trio was rescued by the neighbours and later rushed to the district headquarters hospital at Jajpur town. Their condition is stated to be stable, hospital sources said.
Police said, Ketakis son Mantu Jena (25) began working at a plywood company in Kerala a couple of months back. However, he died of some disease on Tuesday.
Hearing his death news, Ketaki along with her two daughters, jumped into a pond last night. However, the neighbours foiled their suicide bid and rescued them.
However, Ketaki once again tried to commit suicide along with her two children by consuming poison today morning.
Ketaki consumed poison today after poisoning her two daughters this morning. We immediately rescued them and admitted them to the local hospital. But, we shifted the trio to the district headquarters hospital after their condition deteriorated, said Dibakar Jena, a villager.
It was her second suicide bid within 12 hours, he said.
The condition of the mother and her two daughters are stable and they are under the vigil of a team of doctors, said a doctor at District Headquarters hospital.
Prasanta Kumar Mallha, Sub Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) of Jajpur said, Mantu, Ketaki's son, was the lone bread earner of the family as Ketakis husband is mentally challenged.
