58-year-old John, who directed movies like "Cars" and "Cars 2", has teased details about the upcoming fourth instalment in the popular animated franchise, revealing the plot will not follow on from 2010 prequel "Toy Story 3".
"Toy Story 4" will hit theatres in June 2017.
"We're in the early stages of the film, but it's shaping up nicely. It's funny. The story is not as much a continuation of the past films, but a brand new chapter in the "Toy Story' world," John said at the Cannes International Film Festival.
