The goods train was on the main line and had stopped after it overshot a signal, a South Eastern Railway spokesman Sanjay Ghosh said.
The LTT (Kurla)-Shalimar Express was coming on the adjacent loop line in the same direction almost at the same time at 9.52 AM and was to pass the goods train at Sardiha, but stopped as the track signal turned red.
Loop lines are there at places near stations so as to let one train to pass another. The loop lines again meet the main line after a short distance.
The express train left for its destination after a short while.
An enquiry has been started to find out the reason for the goods train's overshooting the signal, Ghosh said.
