A trainee IPS officer drowned in the swimming pool of the national police academy here, police said today.
Manu Mukt Manav, who hailed from Haryana and was alloted Himachal Pradesh cadre, drowned in the swimming pool of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy (SVPNPA) at Shivaramapalli last night, Assistant Commissioner of Police (Rajendranagar Division) A Mutyam Reddy told PTI.
The incident occurred when some trainees, who have qualified for IAS (in the next attempt) organised a get- together in the officers' club for their batch-mates in the Indian Police Service.
"On conclusion of the event, Manu Mukt Manav (aged around 31) entered the academy's swimming pool, adjacent to the club, and was attempting to cross over to the other side.
"When he was seen struggling he was rescued by some fellow Officer Trainees and support staff. They performed CPR (a first aid technique) at the site and thereafter he was taken to the NPA Hospital. From there, he was shifted to Care Hospital in Banjara Hills, where he was declared brought dead," according to a statement issued by SVPNPA.
Academy Director Aruna Bahuguna has ordered an internal inquiry into the matter, while police were conducting a separate investigation, a senior officer at NPA said.
Manav, a resident of Hisar, belonged to the 2013 batch of IPS. Rajendranagar Police have registered a case under CrPC Section 174 (suspicious death).
