In order to accommodate more cluster buses on the city's roads, Transport department of Delhi government has identified land to construct bus depots in the national capital.
According to a senior government official, land has been identified in Dwarka, Rani Khera and Rohini Sector 32 for new depots to park cluster buses.
As per the plan, government wants to add new 10,000 buses but due to land crunch the plan is getting delayed.
Delhiites have been facing difficulties in commuting due to shortage of buses in the capital. The DTC and Delhi Integrated Multi-Model Transit System (DIMTS) are presently operating around 4,500 buses and 1,500 cluster buses (orange) respectively.
"Government has identified land in Rani Khera, Rohini Sector-32 each and two lands in Dwarka to construct bus depots so that more cluster buses could come to roads," a government official said.
The official said that as per court order, both Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) and DIMTS have to run 5,500 buses each to cater to the increasing numbers of commuters.
"There are several concessionaires who want to run their buses under cluster scheme, but to due land crunch, plan is not executing in a full swing.
"In view of this, government has bought land from the DDA to construct new bus depots. Once new bus depots are constructed, there will be no major shortage of buses in the capital and we expect that the numbers of cluster buses, presently stands at 1,500, will soon increase to 2,436," the official said.
DIMTS, which is currently operating buses in nine clusters, has to run buses in 17 clusters as per the agreement.
