A nationwide transport strike called by Left trade unions today to protest proposed amendment by the Centre in the Motor Vehicles Act had little impact in West Bengal with public transport being amply available.

CITU West Bengal state secretary Anadi Sahu, however, claimed that the strike call affected transport services in the districts, while admitting it had little impact in Kolkata and adjoining districts of South and North 24 Parganas.

Transport Minister Suvendu Adhikari said the strike call has had "no effect", with public transportation having been "normal" throughout the state.

Except two complaints of disruption in two bus routes - one from Durgapur and another from Bankura - there has been no irritant in transport services in the state, he said.

"The strike was called to protest the proposed amendment of the MV Act by the BJP-led NDA government at the Centre as it is against the interest of transport workers," Sahu said.
