Former Nepal Prime Minister and senior leader of main opposition CPN-UML Jhala Nath Khanal today said there is no alternative to forging unity among the three major political parties for ensuring meaningful implementation of the Constitution.
Addressing a programme organised by Bhaktapur District Working Committee of the Nepal Intellectual Council on the occasion of Vijaya Dashami and Deepawali festivals, he said for the effective implementation of the Constitution, the prime need of the hour cannot be satisfied only by two major coalition partners-the Nepali Congress and CPN Maoist Centre.
He further accused the two parties in the coalition government of ignoring the role of CPN-UML, the main opposition, in the Constitution implementation process and warned that such an attitude would push the country into a crisis.
The constitution promulgated last year could not be implemented due to the reservation shown by the agitating Madhesi parties.
Amendment of the Constitution to redraw the provincial boundary of the country is the key demand of the Madhesi parties. The minority, mostly of Indian-origin, has led months-long violent protest seeking better representation in the Parliament and the federal structure of the Constitution that divides their ancestral homeland.
