Tributes paid in Punjab Assembly

Tributes were paid to around 40 personalities, including playback singer Manna Dey and actor Pran, on the opening day of Punjab Assembly here today.
The House also recalled the services of former MPs Gurbinder Kaur, wife of late Chief minister H S Brar, and Charanjit Singh Walia.
The people whose services were recalled were those who died in the interim period of this and the last session of the Punjab Assembly.
Speaker Charanjit Singh Atwal read out the obituary references in the Assembly.
Leader of House and Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal was also present in the Assembly along with his son and Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal.

Prominent names among those who were remembered during obituary references included former MLAs Satya Pal Dang, Harish Bedi, Hari Singh Saini, eminent Communist leader Jagjit Singh Lyallpuri, Punjabi writer Rajinder Kaur and Taksali Akali leader Mohinder Singh.
Tributes to 22 freedom fighters were also paid.
The House was adjourned for the day after the obituary references.
