AAP MLA and Environment Minister Imran Hussain said on Wednesday that he had tried to pacify people on the request of police after a scuffle over parking of a vehicle in the Hauz Qazi area here.

Tension prevailed in the old Chawri Bazaar area after the scuffle over parking a scooter took a communal turn and a temple was vandalised in the locality.

Reports emerged that the minister was present in the area at the time of the clash.

Reacting to it, the Ballimaran MLA said the police had called him to the spot as it came under his Assembly constituency.

"After reaching the (police) station around 11.30 pm on that day, I appealed through loudspeaker to people from both sides to calm down," he told PTI.

He said senior police officers, including the deputy commissioner of police, were present at the police station.

"The MLC (medico-legal case) of the person injured in the incident was allowed by people after I urged them to calm down. As an MLA, it was my responsibility to ensure that the situation did not deteriorate," he said.

Hussain claimed that anti-social elements spread rumour in the area following which people gathered there in large numbers leading to tension.
