A top Democratic leader has slammed Donald Trump for still being in campaign mode and urged the new US President to start talking about real issues and not how many people were at the inauguration.
"President Trump ought to realise, he's not campaigning anymore. He's president," Senator Charles Schumer, the Senate Minority Leader, told ABC News.
"Instead of talking about how many people showed up at his inauguration, he ought to be talking about how many people are going to stay into the middle class and move into the middle class," he said.
Schumer alleged that Trump in his inauguration speech talked only to his supporters and not the entire country.
"He spoke only to his supporters. The grand tradition of these speeches is very simple -- unify people, reach out to people who didn't vote for you, when, of course, the majority of people didn't vote for Donald Trump. But instead, he just spoke to his supporters," Schumer alleged.
"The other thing that bothered me about the speech, as much as sort of the narrowness of it and the darkness of America that he portrayed was this. I think he's trying to use populist rhetoric to cover up a right- wing agenda," he said.
"If you look at this cabinet, they are far from the populism that he talked about," he noted.
