The two accused, Suresh Shinde and Sanjay Parab, were arrested after Reliance Capital Limited, which is a financial services company and part of a Reliance Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group, complained that the two submitted fake documents in a bid to avail a home loan of Rs 25 lakh, police said.
The interrogation of the duo revealed that they had earlier duped four banks, including Bank of Baroda and Union Bank of India, to the tune of about Rs 70 lakh over a span of three years, said Deputy Police Commissioner Dhananjay Kulkarni.
"Shinde submitted IT returns, Form 16 and pay slips among others, but they were found to be fake," the DCP told reporters today.
Following company's request, the accused reached its office along with his associate Parab on June 10. The company officials confronted the two saying that the documents they (the accused ) submitted were fake, Kulkarni said adding, "Shinde then admitted that he had forged the documents and his associate Parab helped him in doing so."
"The interrogation of the two has revealed that they had duped four other banks as well. 20 credit and debit cards, two PAN cards, one fake election card was recovered from the accused."
Police suspect that the duo might have cheated several other banks as well.
