The Preliminary Enquiry by CBI has zeroed on an officer of the rank of Joint Director and another officer of the rank of Deputy Inspector General after it was found that some crucial data in a pen drive was found deleted, sources said.
It has claimed that while this may be an inadvertent act by the officers, action should be initiated against the two for such a "gross negligence", the sources claimed.
The PE has been completed and has been with Director Anil Sinha, who is yet to take any action on this.
When asked to comment, CBI spokesperson said the matter is sub-judice, hence it will not be appropriate to comment.
The sources said both are IPS officers. One of them is posted as Joint Director while the other has since been repatriated to his parent cadre, they added.
The CBI woke up to discrepancies after it was pointed out in the court that some of the evidence listed by the agency in its charge sheet was missing.
The CBI filed the case charge sheet in the Shehla Masood murder case in May 2012. She was shot dead outside her house in Bhopal's Koh-e-Fiza area in August 2011 and CBI had named Zahida Parvez, an interior designer who masterminded her murder, alongwith four others.
