Himanshu Prajapati, 23, and his friend Anuj Kumar Gautam have been arrested in connection with the gruesome murder of the girl who was a BA student and resident of Aminabad, Director General of Police Arvind Kumar Jain said here.
He said that Himanshu committed the crime single- handedly.
"He first strangulated the girl and later chopped her body with a saw," he said.
The DGP said that the girl, in her early twenties, knew Himanshu from the last one and a half year and was in regular contact with him through a mobile messaging app.
The DGP said that the accused got angry when he saw messages and photos of other male friends on her mobile.
Senior Superintendent of Police Yashaswi Yadav said that the accused was caught on the basis of CCTV footages and surveillance.
He said that several irrefutable evidences, including the mobile phone and the saw used to chop the body, were seized from the accused's possession.
The DGP said that it was a brutal murder and the accused would be booked under National Security Act.
"It took some time to work out the case but it was a big challenge for police," he said.
Regarding the role of another youth arrested in the incident, he said that Anuj accompanied Himanshu for a long time after the incident.
Several teams were constituted to work out the case, IG (Law and Order) A Satish Ganesh said.
"If there is any lapse on the part on the local police then stern action will be taken against the erring policemen but our first priority is to work out the case," he said.
