Two police jawans of the District Force (DF) were today injured when Naxals attacked a team of security personnel deployed to ensure security to a helicopter in the dense forests of Pamed in Bijapur district.
"The police personnel sustained bullet injuries as the armed Maoists opened fire on them close to Pamed police station, located around 500 km away from the state capital Raipur," Special Director General of Police (SDGP), Anti-Maoist Operations D M Awasthi told PTI.
Security forces were given the task of ensuring security to the helipad ahead of the landing of a helicopter meant to drop some jawans from Bijapur to Pamed, who had returned after the vacation.
After dropping them, the chopper returned and security forces began marching back to its base, he said.
"Meanwhile, a group of Maoists opened fire on them leaving two DF constables- Virendra Mandavi and Akhilesh Chelam-- injured. However, rebels fled from the spot as security forces retaliated," the SDGP said.
Mandavi sustained injuries on his leg, while Chelam was hit by bullet on his chest, he added.
Reinforcement was rushed to the spot and the injured were administered first-aid at Pamed, from where they are being airlifted to Raipur for treatment, he said.
Security forces have launched a combing operation in the region to nab the attackers, he added.
