Two Kanpur district court judges get extortion threat

Security of two judges of the Kanpur District Court was beefed up today, after they received letters threatening to kill them if they failed to pay Rs 10 lakh each, police said today.
Police said the office of the district judge received two letters, one addressed to the district judge and the other to the additional district judge yesterday, warning to blow-up their vehicles if they failed to pay the money.
Two suspects have been taken into custody for questioning, though no arrests have been made so far, Kanpur SSP Shalabh Mathur said.
The threat letter mentioned the name of the purported sender as one Suresh Kumar, a resident of TP Nagar here, and also carried a mobile number so the judges could contact him, police said.

After the judges intimated police about the matter, investigation began and the mobile number mentioned in the letter was traced to Vijay Singh, a resident of Gwaltoli here, police said.
Upon questioning Vijay Singh told the police that the number did not belong to him and that somebody had acquired it using his ID. Even the address mentioned in the letter turned out to be fake, police added.
SSP Mathur said the two suspects in custody are being questioned and security of both the judges beefed up.
On January 26, the central school in Kanpur cantonment area had received a call, threatening to blow it up.
