The 38-year-old music producer is the second composer to return for a Marvel Cinematic Universe direct sequel after Henry Jackman, who scored two "Captain America" movies, reported Aceshowbiz.
James Gunn previously had Bates write some score of "Guardians of the Galaxy" before the cast and crew finished filming so he could shoot scenes set to the music. It is possible the composer may go through a similar process in the sequel.
This will be Bates' fourth collaboration with Gunn as the duo previously worked together in "Slither" and "Super".
Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel and Bradley Cooper will begin filming "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2" in February 2016 in Atlanta. The film is due May 5, 2017 in the US.
