UAE's first solar car, capable of hitting speeds of up to 150 kilometres per hour, was today put on display at a shopping mall in Abu Dhabi.
The idea was perceived when in 2013 at the World Future Energy Summit the Tokai University displayed its own solar car.
Inspired by the idea, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi Shaikh Mohammad Bin Zayed Al Nahyan decided to launch the UAE's own solar-powered cars project.
The project was a success with students from Abu Dhabi's Petroleum Institute managing to build the car, which is on display at Yas Mall, allowing the public to see and learn about the car for themselves.
The solar car is capable of picking speeds of up to 150 kilometres per hour.
Talal Al Dhiyehi, Chief Development Officer at Aldar Properties, said that the display of the solar car shows its continued commitment to a sustainable and clean future.
"We are proud to be hosting the solar car in Town Square created by the engineering stars of tomorrow, increasing environmental awareness in the UAE," he said.
The solar car also made its appearance during the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week, at the Abu Dhabi Solar Challenge 2015, the first such event held in the Middle East.
The UAE-based solar team came second during the race against international competitors from all around the world, with the solar car managing to race for over 13 hours.
