The trial of a British man suspected of plotting the slaying of his wife on their honeymoon in South Africa faced another delay today after a court granted the suspect the right to a new challenge against his extradition.
Shrien Dewani is accused of hiring a hit man to kill his 28-year-old bride Anni, who was shot to death as the couple travelled in a cab on the outskirts of Cape Town three years ago.
The 33-year-old Dewani denies the charges and has been fighting removal to South Africa. His lawyers have argued that he is not fit to stand trial because he suffers from post-traumatic stress and depression. They also say that he is willing to defend himself in court once he is well again.
A court ruled in July that Dewani should be extradited despite his mental health problems, but today three judges at Britain's High Court agreed to give Dewani a new hearing, citing outstanding legal issues to be reconsidered.
Outside court, Anni Dewani's family expressed disappointment at the judges' decision.
"In November, it will be three years since my sister died and we've gone nowhere," her sister Ami Denborg said. "We want this to go to South Africa now because this is taking a toll on the family. It's hard for us to move on with our lives.
