The undertrial has been identified as Gulshan Veer Singh, former Assistant Sub Inspector (ASI) of Punjab police.
Singh was lodged in sub jail here on May 27, 2014 on the charges of murder and kidnapping along with two other accused.
He was facing trial at Amritsar and due to some fight inter-se parties, the undertrial was ordered to be shifted here, police said.
Yesterday, two mobiles and three sims were recovered from his possession during a special checking of jail with the help of sniffer dog, Jail Superintendent Satnam Singh said.
Later, the undertrial with the help of some sharp edged weapon cut some veins of his hand, he said.
The undertrial was shifted to local civil hospital and is under treatment.
