At least two Pakistani soldiers were killed today after four bike-borne unidentified gunmen attacked their vehicle in one of the busiest commercial areas in the country's largest city.
According to initial details, four gunmen on two motorcycles opened fire on a military vehicle near the Parking plaza in Saddar close to the congested Empress market area.
Karachi police chief Mushtaq Mahar told reporters that the two security personnel were badly wounded in the firing and rushed to a hospital where they succumbed to their injuries.
Mahar said that four men on two motorcycles had intercepted the vehicle as it slowed down to take a sharp turn.
Television channels reported that the attack left the driver of the vehicle seriously wounded who lost control of the vehicle which hit a wall.
The gunmen managed to flee from the scene.
Mahar said they would view the CCTV footage to get details about the incident and some identification of the attackers.
Security officials have cordoned off the area while forensic officials have reached the spot to collect evidence for further investigation.
The incident was similar to the one that took place last December when gunmen on motorcycles opened fire on a military vehicle on the busy MA Jinnah road in Saddar and killed two military police officials.
Today's attack came as the authorities backed by security personnel started a three-day polio immunisation drive in Karachi.
In the past anti-polio workers including female volunteers and policemen have been attacked and killed by unidentified gunmen during the immunisation drive.
Last month, target killers had also gunned down noted Qawwal, Amjad Sabri in the congested Liaquatabad area of Karachi.
