The 36-year-old actress, known for her leading role as Liz Parker on "Roswell", is slated to appear in one episode, and is likely to appear in additional episodes as Dr Carla Niven, ex-girlfriend of first-year resident Dr Malaya Pineda (Melanie Chandra), reported Variety.
The pregnant Dr Niven, who works at a nearby hospital, reconnects with Dr Pineda when she checks into the Angels Memorial ER and is treated by Pineda for muscle pain that is ultimately diagnosed as cancer.
The pair began a relationship when Niven was doing her training at Angels and Pineda was a medical student.
Aside from "UnReal", in which Appleby will remain a series regular for season two, she also starred in "Life Unexpected" and "Girls".
"Code Black" will air on September 30.
