Opposition Samajwadi Party (SP) members today created a ruckus in the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council on the issue of law and order for the second straight day and staged a walkout during the Zero Hour.
Raising the issue, the SP members claimed that the crime situation had deteriorated and sought a discussion on the issue through an adjournment notice.
Sunil Singh Sajan (SP) referred to an incident of rape in Faizabad and another in Sarojininagar to hit out at the government. Anand Bhadauria (SP) alleged that "Uttar Pradesh had become 'balatkar' (rape) Pradesh".
Leader of Opposition Ahmed Hasan said, "The law and order situation in the state has deteriorated and everyone has to find a solution. People have lost faith in the police. The proposed UPCOCA will not prove to be of much help."
Refuting the charges, deputy chief minister and Leader of the House Dinesh Sharma said, "The culprits in both the Faizabad and Lucknow incidents have been arrested. In the eight-month rule of Yogi Adityanath, anti-Romeo squads have (from March 22 to December 5) registered 1,647 cases and action has been initiated against 2,919 persons."
He said that an anti-land mafia task force was working hard to free government land from encroachers.
"During the tenure of Yogi Adityanath, cases of dacoity have registered a 3.75 per cent decline, while cases of murder have come down by 7.51 per cent and abduction for ransom was down by 17.31 per cent. Apart from this, incidents against SC/ST have dropped by 14.69 per cent. During this government, 765 encounters have taken place, in which 23 criminals were killed and 1,821 arrested," he said.
Hasan, however, trashed the data as fake and claimed that crime during Adityanath's tenure surged by 40 per cent.
SP members then staged a walk-out.
Earlier, during the Question Hour also SP members had staged a walkout. Shashank Yadav (SP) said that stray cattle damaged the crops. Naresh Uttam (SP) added that stray cattle was the biggest menace for farmers.
Replying to the concerns, Dinesh Sharma said, "The problem of stray cattle is not new. The government through Kanha Upvan Pariyojana is working for conservation of animals in every district." Dissatisfied SP members then walked out of the House.
