The trouble arose when Speaker Biman Banerjee rejected an adjournment motion moved by CPI(M) member and Leader of the Opposition Surjya Kanta Mishra and others demanding discussion on deteriorating law and order and growing crimes against women in the state, but allowed him to read it.

As soon as Mishra began criticising the state government's failure, the Speaker stopped him and asked him to sit down.

The LF members immediately started shouting against the Speaker's decision and rushed to his table with placards in hand and began shouting slogans and threw papers to protest discrimination by the Chair.

The Speaker carried on the scheduled business of the House amidst bedlam even when nothing could be heard, and ultimately announced recess.

Talking to reporters later, Mishra claimed that no adjournment motion moved by the opposition in the last 18 months was granted in the House.

Citing incidents of rape, molestation and other crimes against women in the last 18 months, Mishra alleged that the police and administration remained silent and inactive despite complaints by the opposition.

CPI(M) leader Abdur Rezzak Mollah claimed that crimes against women during the 500-day-old Mamata Banerjee government were much more than during the 34-year rule by the Left Front.
