"China made an announcement. It is for China to not implement it, which is what we're calling on them to do. We don't recognise it. We don't accept it," White House Press Secretary Jay Carney told reporters.
"So an announcement is an announcement. The fact of the matter is we've been very clear about our view of it and how we will react to it and our broader concern about the tension in the region and how these kinds of provocative actions could lead to miscalculation and to further tension in the region, which is not in the interests of any of the nations involved," Carney said.
"And it will not change how the United States conducts military operations in the region. It does not have any practical effect on US government operations," he said in response to a question.
"We have been very clear about our view on this and have been clear, not just in our public pronouncements, but in the, as the Vice President said, in his meetings with Chinese leaders."
"So the broader point, we're trying to make to the Chinese is that this is not how major powers conduct themselves and that there is enormous danger in these kinds of provocative actions in a region of the world," Carney said.
