According to a notification issued by the US Food and Drug Administration (USFDA), the products are manufactured by Shree Baidyanath Ayurved Bhawan in India and sold in the United States at retail outlets and through Internet.
One major retailer has recalled the products. The FDA is working to identify other companies that may have sold the products.
"Testing by the New York Department of Health and the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has found that these products contain high levels of lead and/or mercury, which can cause serious health problems.
The FDA advised the public to stop using them immediately. If anyone is taking any of these Baidyanath brand Ayurvedic products, consult your health care provider, it suggested.
The regulator asked the people to avoid using Baidyanath brand Agnitundi Bati, Baidyanath brand Arogyavardhini Bati Baidyanath brand Brahmi Bati, Baidyanath brand Chitrakadi Bati, Baidyanath brand Gaisantak Bati and Baidyanath brand Marichyadi Bati.
Officials of Baidyanath could not be reached for their comments.
