Deputy Mayor of Vadodara, Sunita Shukla, was today injured after a mob of over a hundred people today stormed into the function organised by the local civic body near here and hurled stones at the invited guests apparently to protest lack of basic facilities in their area, an official said.
The incident took place this evening at the foundation stone laying ceremony of Mukhyamantri Awas Yojna, a housing scheme meant for the lower income groups at Gotri area on the outskirts of the city organised by Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC).
State Finance Minister Saurabh Patel was also present at the event, said officials.
"As soon as minister Patel arrived for the event and went on the dias, some angry local residents, including women, came at the venue and started throwing chairs meant kept for the audience," Chintan Desai, municipal secretary of VMC told PTI.
They were protesting against their alleged non-cognisance of their issues related to basis facilities like roads, drainage in Gotri area, he added.
The minister soon left the venue in his car, followed by other dignitaries. But, when Shukla was about to sit inside her car, she was hit by stones.
"At least two stones hit her head, leaving her seriously injured. She was then rushed to a private hospital for treatment. The mob also targetted government vehicles and damaged windscreens of some of the cars," said an official.
No police complaint has been lodged in this regard so far.
