The Bombay High Court has allowed the legal heirs of Goolam Vahanvati, the former Attorney General, to find an amicable solution to their dispute over the family properties by October 28.
Vahanvati, an eminent lawyer, died last month. His properties include houses in Mumbai, Pune and Delhi, vintage cars, investments in shares and fixed deposits in banks.
His daughter Sholeen Carrimjee has filed a petition against her step-mother Nafisa, nominated by Vahanvati as the major beneficiary of his estate. Sholeen has claimed a share in her father's estate under the Muslim personal law.
Their lawyers had yesterday made a statement before the vacation judge of the High Court, Justice A S Gadkari, that they were trying to arrive at an amicable settlement.
They also stated that until the next date of hearing, which is October 28, the legal heirs of the family would voluntarily maintain a status quo on Vahanvati's properties which are estimated to be worth over Rs 50 crore.
Justice Gadkari also opined that the family members should try to settle their dispute amicably.
Nafisa, who was Vahanvati's second wife, has three children from her first marriage. Vahanvati had two children from his first wife, daughter Sholeen and son Essaji.
