Vinayaka Chathurthi was today celebrated with fervour across Tamil Nadu with devotees making a beeline outside temples since morning to worship the elephant-headed God.
Devotees offered 'kozhukattai' (a sweet delicacy) to idols of Lord Ganesha, which is believed to be the deity's favourite and offered prayers at home.
Ganesh idols, made of clay and decorated with garlands and colourful toy umbrellas, were found in several households, while larger idols made of plaster of paris were found at public places, including temples, malls and shops.
People exchanged small idols of Lord Ganesh.
Police have already issued guidelines for displaying big idols across Tamil Nadu, as it should not hinder traffic movement in the cities.
In the historic place of Uchipillayar Koil in Tiruchirapalli, where Lord Ganesh's temple is situated on a hill-top, special prayers were offered and a mega 'kozhukattai' was presented.
Chief Minister Jayalalithaa and state BJP president Pon Radhakrishnan had greeted people on the eve of the festival and wished prosperity and wellness for all.
In the neighbouring Union Territory of Puducherry, people thronged the over 300-year-old Manakula Vinayakar temple in the heart of the town to offer prayers to the deity.
New shops and establishments were opened as the day is most auspicious to launch new ventures.
