Reminding West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of her "raj dharma", state Congress president Adhir Chowdhury today urged her to take necessary steps to "establish order in the society" and "stop attacks on opposition workers".
"I would like to bring to your notice incidents that have been taking place in the state after your party came to power ....There have been instances of several post-poll violences in the state," Chowdhury said in a letter to Banerjee.
"You, while addressing the people of Bengal after a massive victory, had clearly stated that everyone should be proactive in maintaining law and order. But unfortunately attacks on opposition parties have increased," he claimed.
Chowdhury questioned whether democracy means protecting only TMC supporters.
"The people of Bengal have blessed you with their votes and once you get elected you are the Chief Minister of everyone irrespective of your supporter or your opposition. Where is the 'raj dharma'?" he asked.
"I urge your good office to stick to good governance and rule of law. In a democracy even the opposition has existence and presence," Chowdhury said.
"Is your government trying to crush the opposition and establish a one-party government. Is this the ethos of Indian democracy? I put these questions to you and would firmly believe that you would act like a true statesman," he added.
