West Bengal Governor Keshari Nath Tripathi today remembered the country's first Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru on the eve of his 128th birth anniversary and described him as the "maker of modern India".
Tripathi also said that Nehru had worked extensively against untouchability, caste discrimination as well as for women emancipation and secularism in the country.
"Pandit Nehru was one of the most popular national and international figures. He is considered as the maker of modern India because of his leadership during his first Prime Ministership of India," Tripathi was quoted as saying in a statement issued from Raj Bhawan here.
The governor said one of the great contributions of Nehru was his chief foreign policy of non-alignment.
"Nehru also outlined the diplomatic policy of 'panchasheel' (five principles) which was primarily aimed at promoting peaceful relationships with our neighbouring countries," Tripathi said.
the Planning Commission was the brainchild of Nehru, he said.
Tripathi said November 14 is celebrated in the country as 'Children's Day' in recognition of Nehru's "lifelong passion and work for welfare of children and youth".
