The West Bengal Commission for Women today decided to hold workshops across the state after the Durga Puja to create social awareness at the grass roots level to curb violence against women, its new Vice-Chairperson Dola Sen said today.
"Instead of only being confined to urban areas, we want to take the matter of creating social awareness at the grass roots for which the commission will conduct workshops in 20 districts after the pujas," Sen told PTI here.
During visits to districts, a commission team and she would talk to Superintendents of police and the local police authorities for close co-ordination to curb violence against women, molestation, dowry, female foeticide and acid attacks.
She said the commission was planning to set up a mechanism for handling late night distress calls from women.
Without giving details, she said, "If some woman calls at 12 o'clock in the night that she is being driven out from the house, the police should immediately look into it," Sen who is also the president of president of the Indian National Trinamool Trade Union Congress said.
She said during the visits, effective implementation of benefits of different welfare programmes of the state government for targeted women and children would be looked into.
She also wanted that the meeting of the commission should be held every week instead of once in a month at present. "I will make effort toward this," she added.
