Stating that the Assam government had on its own taken action against chit funds in the state, Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi today said he "welcome" opposition Asom Gana Parishad's demand for his interrogation by the CBI.
"It is our Government that handed over the cases to the CBI. The CID has been investigating the cases since the past two years," Gogoi said in a statement here.
"No opposition parties or organisations raised such a demand. Now the AGP is raising a hue and cry over it and demanding interrogation of me. I welcome it," he said.
Gogoi said that anyone "involved in furthering the illegal activities of the chit fund companies or found guilty of patronising such firms should not be spared."
AGP has demanded that Gogoi must be brought under the ambit of CBI investigation.
Meanwhile, a team of CBI officials led by the investigative agency's Joint Director (North East) R P Agrawal today held a meeting with senior officials from CID and Bureau of Economic Offences here, sources said.
The meeting, held at CBI's Guwahati office, reviewed various cases registered against chit fund companies in the state.
The CBI team is expected to submit a report later to its headquarters in New Delhi regarding plans for further action. Based on the report, CBI headquarters will decide which cases are to be investigated by the central agency, the sources added.
Gogoi had yesterday said that the state government wanted to hand over cases against 11 companies, including Saradha Group, to the CBI.
