Mumbai Congress president Sanjay Nirupam today questioned why the BJP government at the Centre was adopting "different yardsticks" for ministers and officials in Lalit Modi controversy.
"Why are there different yardsticks for ministers and officials?" Nirupam said while addressing a press conference here.
Nirupam, however, said that there is nothing wrong in Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis seeking explanation from Mumbai Police Commissioner Rakesh Maria over his meeting with Lalit Modi last year.
"There is nothing wrong with it. Maria will have to explain under what circumstances he met Modi, who is accused of money laundering to the tune of rs 700 crore. But Fadnavis should prevail upon Prime Minister Narendra MOdi to seek explanation from external affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje as well," he said.
Two days back, Maria had come out with a statement admitting that he had met the tainted ex-IPL boss in London in 2014 on the insistence of the latter's lawyer.
Meanwhile, the city Congress chief demanded resignation of state Education Minister Vinod Tawde after a TV channel claimed that the institute from which Tawde obtained his engineering degree was not recognised by the government.
"The engineering degree obtained from the institute is bogus. Tawde should resign from the ministry and he should be arrested just like Delhi Law Minister Jitendra Singh Tomar was arrested in the fake degree case," Nirupam said.
