Will not interfere in autonomy of varsities: WB Min

West Bengal government today said it will not interfere in the autonomy of universities, but step in if there were law and order problems or matter related to financial irregularities.
Speaking at a function at Jadavpur University here today, West Bengal education minister Partha Chatterjee said autonomy would not be curbed because the university authorities would take care of internal matters.
"But if there is a law and order problem in universities or economic irregularities, then the government will have to look into it and take action," the minister said, adding it was because the government gives monetary support to the state varsities.

"It is people's money and our responsibility, so we have to look into it if there is any financial irregularity," Chatterjee said.
He said, they also have to give explanation to the CAG.
