With 40,917 film screens, China has overtaken the US for the first time as the total number of screens in America stood at 40,759.
There are 40,917 film screens in Chinese mainland cinemas as of December 20, according to the film bureau of the State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television (SARFT) today.
The film industry has seen huge growth, with 26 film screens on average added each day during 2016, it said, adding that 85 per cent of all new screens can play 3D movies.
China has overtaken the US in terms of film screen numbers as the total number of screens in America stood at 40,759, it said, quoting a report of America's National Association of Theatre Owners.
Box office sales in China, the world's second largest film market, have posted average growth of 35 per cent year on year since 2003, state-run Xinhua news agency reported today.
China's 2016 box office sales are expected to exceed the 2015 total of 44 billion yuan (USD 6.4 billion), SARFT said.
China ranked second in box office earning after Hollywood whose revenue was estimated to be around USD 10.35 billion. India's Bollywood was ranked third with estimated USD 2.20 billion last year.
