In the wake of Reese Witherspoon and husband Jim Toth's surprising arrest and brief jailing, the actress says she is sorry and "deeply embarrassed" for her behaviour.
The 37-year-old actress and her Hollywood agent husband were both arrested early Friday in Atlanta. Toth for an alleged drunk driving and Witherspoon for disobeying instruction from a police officer to remain in her vehicle during the traffic stop.
The 'Legally Blonde' star has now released a statement of apology for her behaviour, reported E! online.
"Out of respect for the ongoing legal situation, I cannot comment on everything that is being reported right now. But I do want to say, I clearly had one drink too many and I am deeply embarrassed about the things I said. It was definitely a scary situation and I was frightened for my husband, but that is no excuse," Witherspoon said.
"I was disrespectful to the officer who was just doing his job. I have nothing but respect for the police and I'm very sorry for my behaviour," she added.
A court hearing on the matter has been set in Atlanta Municipal Court but both Witherspoon and Toth are not expected to be present.
Their lawyer probably will request the judge to postpone the court date, because Witherspoon is in New York City for the premiere of her new movie 'Mud'.
