A 65-year-old woman was first strangulated and then bludgeoned to death allegedly by her step-grandson over few thousands rupees at her residence in west Delhi's Mohan Garden area, police said today.
The woman, Munni Devi, was a widow and lived alone in the house after her husband's death around two years ago. Her son, Rajkumar, lives with his family at Rajapuri area nearby, said police.
The matter came to light when Devi's neighbour came to her house in the afternoon to offer her some 'prasad' and found her dead, following which the police were informed, said a senior police official, adding that the neighbours also informed Rajkumar.
Devi's deceased husband had two daughters from his previous marriage and one of the daughters has a son named Vinay, who lived nearby. After getting the news of his mother's death, Rajkumar also called Vinay for support, said police.
When the local police questioned Rajkumar and Vinay about their whereabouts last night, they gave their answers and claimed that they were keeping busy lately for which they could not meet Munni Devi.
A crime team followed the local police to the spot and when CCTV footage were checked, they found a youth enter Munni Devi's residence last night and leaving in the morning. The youth later turned out to be Vinay, said police.
"When Vinay was subjected to interrogation, it emerged that he had gone to Munni Devi's house last night where he strangulated her, and when she did not die, he bludgeoned her to death," said the senior official.
During interrogation, Vinay also revealed that he had recently borrowed money from his friends to buy a smartphone and was being pressurised to pay back. He visited Munni Devi's house last night and demanded cash.
When Munni Devi refused, her step-grandson turned infuriated and murdered her. He also took away around Rs 4,000 from her residence but the cash is yet to be recovered, police added.
