Mumbai police have registered a case of cheating and forgery against a woman who allegedly collected donations by claiming a connection with legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar.
Mangeshkar had lodged a complaint in this regard two days ago.
The woman, who identified herself as 'Revati Khare', told people that she knew Mangeshkar very well and was helping the singer with her secret philanthropic work.
She also produced forged letterheads bearing Mangeshkar's name to back her claim and get money.
Mangeshkar learnt that someone was misusing her name and lodged a complaint at the Gamdevi police station.
The woman, who is yet to be traced, is suspected to have collected lakhs of rupees in this way, said a police officer.
Police have registered an offence under IPC sections 420 (cheating) and 465 (forgery).
One of the 'donors' also approached the police, claiming that he was cheated of Rs 30,000 by the woman. Further probe is on.
