The incident took place yesterday when some women from Akhlore village here were working in a forest area which falls at the border area between Muzaffarnagar and Saharanpur, police said.
A youth from bordering village of Rankhandi in Saharanpur asked the victim, identified as Laxmi, to labour in his sugarcane fields nearby.
When she refused, she was allegedly beaten up and shot at by the accused, who is absconding.
Police said that the victim was shifted to a hospital in Muzaffarnagar in a serious condition. Following the incident, irate villagers protested and demanded strict action against the accused.
